Named after Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the United States and son of a Grand Rapids native, the ship is the Navy's newest aircraft carrier. The $12.9 billion warship is spread over 4.5 acres and is the first of the Navy's next-generation aircraft carriers. The Associated Press recently released a series of photos showing the interior of the ship.

This aircraft carrier and its successors, the USS John F. Kennedy and the USS Enterprise, replace the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers commissioned in 1975.

The AP reports that Ford construction began in 2009 and Kennedy construction began in 2015. Construction is expected to begin on the Enterprise in 2018, but may be delayed.

The ship includes an electromagnetic launch system for jets and unmanned aerial vehicles, a replacement for steam catapults. According to the Associated Press, the massive warship cruises at speeds of over 30 knots and can operate for 20 years without refueling.
