aircraft carrier crossword

Aircraft Carrier Crossword - Navy officials were "surprised," a spokesman told me Thursday, of President Donald Trump's suggestion that the Navy abandon a long-planned digital launch in favor of steam for its new aircraft carriers.

The American magazine described Trump's dislike of the Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launch System, called EMALS, on the USS.

(he released only excerpts of the interview, not the full text.) The President explained that he wanted to abandon EMALS, the major technology development at the heart of the multibillion-dollar launch project, and return to steam operations.

Us Carrier, South Korea Warships Start New Drills Amid Tensions

I said, "You don't use steam to make catapults anymore?" “No sir. I said, "Ah, how does it work?" "Lord, it's not good. It's not good. He has no power. You know, steam is just cruel. You see this book going and steam rising everywhere, airplanes being thrown into the air. It sounded bad to me. Digital. You are digital. What is digital? And it's so complicated, you'd have to be Albert Einstein to figure it out. And we said - and now they want to buy more aircraft carriers. I said, "Which program do you want..." "Sir, we're stuck with digital." I said, “No, you're not. If you go to Goddamn Steam, digital costs hundreds of millions of dollars more and it doesn't help."

What is digital? To answer the President's question without going into too many 0's and 1's, "digital" means using a computer to make something happen. You know, the same kind of machine that connects us all to the Internet. Are you still with me, or are we going to bring Einstein here? (I mean, Einstein did amazing work and is getting more and more recognition.) EMALS is not just computer based, it uses a linear inference engine. This engine, which uses electric currents to activate a magnetic core, propels the carriage down the rails to launch the aircraft, rather than using steam piston propulsion to pull the aircraft.

Despite Trump's technological inclinations — he's TV-savvy, an Internet neophyte, and has a preternatural sense of the Twitter game — his questioning of "digital" calls to mind his ignorance of Internet security.

It's not like EMALS has been a resounding success. Cost and schedule overruns earned the Navy carrier project a reputation as "one of the most spectacular acquisition failures in recent memory," as Arizona Republican Senator John McCain put it in 2015. "And that's saying something." Construction of the three Ford division aircraft companies has grown from $27 billion to $36 billion over the past 10 years.

Troubled Uss Ford Hits Major Milestone As Newport News Shipyard Completes Work On Navy's Newest Carrier

But the problems with the Ford-class carrier system are more organizational than technical -- a common theme in major infrastructure projects. McCain blamed the "poor alignment of accountability and responsibility in our defense procurement system" and the size of the defense procurement program affecting bureaus and program managers.

Trump appears to have capitalized on the project's bad reputation without acknowledging the difficulty of moving from Steam to digital -- or at least without explicitly stating it.

Steam powered catapult systems to be modified have been used to launch American airplanes for nearly sixty years. Steam systems are less difficult to maintain than electric ones; They have a low combat time cap - meaning the power systems can launch more aircraft in less time. Electric systems can also handle small planes and drones better than steam. Steam systems also put more stress on airframes, making them more susceptible to corrosion. Not only that, but the carriers themselves are extremely vulnerable to attack - which means that equipping them with modern defense systems is a priority.

The purpose of this advanced program is to use the launchers to "build a mobile honeycomb of connected forces with range, scope and threat against air, sea, surface and land-based targets," as Robbin Laird and Ed Timperlake advocated on the website Breaking Defense 2015.

U.s. Aircraft Carrier Costs Rising Again, Navy Budget Shows

Despite some high-profile failures in early testing, EMALS is now nearly complete and ready for sea trials. It is one of three major steps in the Navy's effort to develop its weapons systems for the digital age.

Trump's insistence on steam is perhaps puzzling, but it is also consistent with his other views on technology. After all, the president has repeatedly talked about returning to the age of manufacturing in America -- a ridiculous idea, unfortunately, for anyone who has looked closely at the forces driving the global economy. Among them: the rise of automation, which promises to dramatically change the way people work in many industries, and which Trump has not ignored.

On the other hand, for someone who is clearly concerned about size, one might think that Trump might enjoy EMALS: With efficiency, the system can launch anything from a sleek drone to a super-tough F-35, and it blows away those technical reserves. Restrictions on Steam. Trump has shown his love for supercarriers, announcing plans to increase the US fleet from 10 to 12.

However, he did not specify how he intends to pay for it. The cost of Ford's new advanced jet -- about $11 billion without additional costs -- will eat up about 20 percent of Trump's proposed defense budget, Reuters reported in March.

The military says it is trying to figure out how to deal with the president's concerns. The spokesperson said that they will issue a statement on Thursday afternoon and identify the speeches of the marine leaders if the issue comes up at public events.

In the meantime, Trump would do well to think more about his campaign's infrastructure promise than the near-perfect military project he seems to have misunderstood.

aircraft carrier bridge

aircraft carrier bridge

Aircraft Carrier Bridge - From the surface of the flight deck, one feature literally stood above all others. He climbed several floors into the sky with a commanding view of everything that happens in and around the ship.

The Navy called this feature an "island." It's funny, I thought of the whole aircraft carrier as an island completely surrounded by ocean, with no land in sight. I think that made this deck tower an island-or-island.

Although large and visible on the carrier, this island would be quite small if it were an office building, which works to some extent. Compare it to the people and planes in the foreground and note its size. However, it served as the nerve center for the ship and the carrier group as a whole. Different functions were implemented in separate layers of the deck.

Take A Tour Of $12.9b Uss Gerald R. Ford, '4.5 Acres Of Sovereign U.s. Territory'

The captain occupied the bridge, whose cabin is located several decks directly below. He could walk back to the bridge, climbing the steep steps if necessary to reach his seat. The bridge hummed with constant activity as we visited during an active deployment.

However, the captain did not personally steer the ship. I had visions of the captain standing on a large wooden wheel and turning it back and forth like in a pirate movie. Not like that. Instead, the captain gave orders that were relayed to someone on his staff, who then turned a wheel smaller than the one found on the car! Imagine an entire aircraft carrier, over a thousand feet (330 meters) long, guided from the bridge by a tiny physical movement on a tiny wheel.

Stannis also had a flag bridge, so-called Because a flag officer - in this case an admiral commanding a carrier battle group - occupied the space. In a previous article, I noted that the admiral and his staff were not deployed for these short exercises.

The Flag Bridge remained empty during our visit, so we had plenty of time to cross. It offered a great view of the flight deck and I spent a lot of time just watching the hypnotic cycle of take off and landing out the window. It never got old.

I also really liked the flight deck control center. It looked as good as expected, although the other feature, the Ouija Board, I appreciated even more. There were two layers doubling the flight deck and hangar bay. Small pieces of wood represented all the aircraft on the ship and the crew members moved them on board according to their current position.

They also took small random objects like nuts (metal things that are bolted on, not something wooden) and the tops of plastic brackets and placed them on top of the holes to show some detail. They were stored in a battered metal can. Open this photo in another window, zoom in and you will see them.

It looked like something was overdue for the automation, and indeed, the electronic wall-mounted displays contained exactly the same information. The crew explained that they needed a manual Ouija Board in case the computers ever broke down. They can use it as a backup. Moreover, they seem to have used the board as their primary tool with computers as backup. I think they just loved the simplicity and quirkiness of the low-tech board and it had a certain charm to it.

The balcony off the Captain's Bridge had an unusual name, Vulture Row. It offered a beautiful view of the open air flight deck. I think the people on the balcony could be seen from the flight deck and they probably looked like tadpoles hanging out there. There are two people on the left in the photo. They are in Vulture's Row. We had the opportunity to do the same that evening. I shot the night landing scene on video from there.

But I have nothing more to add. I only mentioned it because I liked the creative name.

Other activities took place on the island. Generally, we could take pictures as long as we kept the screens out of the image. In some cases we were asked to refrain from photography altogether. So I can mention some of these places, but I have nothing to show for it.

Air traffic controllers perform the same activities as their civilian counterparts, ensuring that aircraft stay safely within the surrounding airspace. Another group monitored enemy incursions within a certain radius and was ready to take military countermeasures if necessary. These crew members stayed in windowless rooms, sometimes entering other windowless rooms. We only saw what was right for us.

The island also contained a large array of communications equipment and antennas for all sorts of purposes that were never revealed to us. The crew explained in detail what they could be talking about, although I'm sure the ship's capabilities were far beyond anything I would have ever learned.

Named after Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the United States and son of a Grand Rapids native, the ship is the Navy's newest aircraft carrier. The $12.9 billion warship is spread over 4.5 acres and is the first of the Navy's next-generation aircraft carriers. The Associated Press recently released a series of photos showing the interior of the ship.

If you train, depend on your gun in your life, or just have a chance at sighting, look no further than Glock's factory magazines for the best performance. Glock magazines come with a strong spring rate from the factory to ensure reliability in the toughest conditions. In some cases, it may seem difficult to load magazines at first. However, after a few times of loading and unloading, the spring breaks in properly and makes loading easier.

For the strength and durability of the factory, Glock magazines are covered with a polymer body crack. This temporary increase depends on officers, members of the military, and civilians who are not involved in heavy training.

1950 Madsen 9mm M-50 This is a pre-test weapon available to dealers only. Full factory gun with 9x19mm chamber. Comes with a factory magazine and slingshot. Let's take a minute to discuss the bane of my existence - factory gun sights. I hate them. It doesn't even matter which manufacturer, really. Realistically, you'll end up with one of two options: 1) some kind of white dot sight, to include Glock's weird gourd/basket setup, or 2) some kind of glowing 3-dot sight. As a Glock shooter, I don't like both options, so I rarely pick up the more expensive night vision gun. I usually buy the cheapest plastic sights and use the savings to get a nice set of replacement sights. I'm always open to new designs, but as of now my favorite views are 10-8 Performance.

10-8 Performance markets sights for a wide variety of defensive revolvers, and Rainier carries (manufactured by 10-8 Performance) their Glock, 1911 and Smith & Wesson varieties. I've had 10-8 scopes on my Glocks for over six years now, and I'd like to point out a few features I really like about them: First, their scopes are a combination of a solid black rear with a dot. front The idea behind this design is to draw attention to the front stitch without being distracted by back stitches. This allows for faster acquisition when engaging a target.

Glock 43x 9mm Pistol, 10 Round Magazines, Fixed Sights: Mgw

Second, I find the 0.140" wide rear U-notch combined with the 0.125" wide front post is an excellent balance between fast acquisition and accuracy. 10-8 sells a wider rear sight on its own website, but I've used the 0.140" and 0.156" rear sights and I believe the 0.156" is a little too wide (for me) at that time when you need a good shot and This is also a problem I've had with other "speed" scopes with wide rear notches. The rear has a nice ridge for one-handed manipulation and is serrated to reduce glare.

Third, they offer a choice of tritium (https:///10-8-glock-front-sight-tritium-215-height-125-width/) or fiber optic (https:///10-8-glock ) . -front-sight-fiber-optic-215-height-125-width/) for your front sight. I still use tritium sights on my personal gun. That said, I've been researching the sights as the 10-year expiration approaches. My research indicates to me that years of use in competition (and other) shooting formats show real advantages of fiber optics over tritium. Advantages include easy field replacement, lower cost and excellent gloss. Another consideration in choosing between tritium and fiber optics is lightweight and portable defensive use. A high-output defensive light can eliminate a tritium point, whereas fiber optics will simply use that light. When my current tritium sights get cloudy, or if I can justify re-sighting before then, I'll probably switch to fiber optics. If you're in the market for some replacement sights for your Glock or M&P, take a minute and check out the 10-8 options. Whether you're looking for a defensive or competitive view, they likely have something that will suit your needs. I hope this has been helpful. If so, please share. As always, Rainier Arms is ready to help you pursue your passion.

I fully believe in my ability to handle any situation that may arise in this countryside. Recoil and muzzle jump are very manageable with Winchester silver tips. I also bought a plastic end cap for the weed next to the handle where the mag is. I've heard that dirt can get into the firing mechanism through there - but IDK that's for sure yet.

With a full mag, be sure to push it hard into the body of the pistol—it's a shame to drop the mag. Hopefully - the spring will soften a bit.

I went to the range last week and shot 3 different ammo. Blazer, SIG/SAUER, and Armscor. All 3 performed without any problem. But I will say that I like ARMSCOR the best.

I have a small 4 carry gun, but I like more power! BOSS, I.E. The wife likes a small gun. I never wanted to make him mad enough to shoot me. He's a better shot than me! His father raised him to NRA competition in the late 50's and early 60's, and he won many trophies, always beating the man! It never hurts!

I'm torn between 10mm vs .45 ACP. However, after reviewing several ballistics and performance studies, there is no doubt... G20 wins in all areas: muzzle and target speed and power, flight trajectory, etc. Although the ammunition is a little expensive, I am still happy that I got it. This is mainly for personal protection but if that black bear shows up in my yard again he might get a third shampoo!

I've been teetering on the edge of getting one of these for a while now. Never thought of Glocks because of the plastic and lack of manual protection. However, one of the .45acp landed in my lap and has greatly exceeded my standards-, in terms of ergos, simplicity, and weight. So this will be my first 10mm, based on previous experience with my Glock... 15 rounds of 10mm should be good for anything I'm going to encounter in the southern Rockies I call "home".

I am on my 2nd Glock 10mm and I love it. It packs a punch but is nothing "out of control". I'm not a big guy but the sights straight out of the box have been tweaked a bit for my taste (no additives, just stock) and hit my mark every time. Great weapons!!!

In Houston, it's shorts-and-shirt season nine months of the year, and most of the time I'm carrying its little brother, the Glock 29. But when it's cold and I wear a jacket, I still pack the G20. With 16 rounds of hole punch, I think I can make anything that presents itself. If Sasquatch had made a bad decision to show up, the G20 would have more than regretted it. Love this gun.

My Glock 20 is my weapon for protecting my home, no harm intended but it is a weapon that protects me from wildlife and other intruders.

However, one of the 0.45acp fell on my lap and it has become a big deal for me in terms of quality, function, simplicity, and weight considerations. So this is my first 10mm, based on my previous experience with the Glock... 15 rounds of 10mm should be fine for anything I come across in the southern Rockies which I call "home".

I am on my second Glock 10mm and love it. There is control but nothing "uncontrollable". I'm not a big person but with instant and a little twist to my taste (no extras, just inventory) and I hit my achievements every time. Amazing weapons!!!

Glock 20 4th generation My first gun, big and strong to protect my home, especially for wild life

It was my first gun, and like your first love, it will always be your favorite. In Houston, the weather is short and t-shirts for nine months of the year, and most of the time I usually carry its smaller brother, the Glock 29. But when it's colder and I'm wearing a jacket, I'm still carrying the G20. With 16 empty rounds, I think I can handle anything that comes up. If Sasquatch has any bad judgment to show, G20 will regret it. He likes this gun.

My glock 20 is a tool to protect my home, there is no harm in it but it is a tool to protect me from wild animals and other intruders

10 Mm Glock Price

I am looking for a pistol that is more powerful than my 9 MM and .45 ACP. Many recommended the 10MM so I used one of my Blue Label certificates and bought the Gen 4 G20.

This gun is a complete package. It is powerful yet manageable. It has great power and I would use it with confidence to protect a house or any big game (ie bears). This is my 5th Glock and I love them all.

It will be interesting to see what the Gen 5 G20 adds if Glock ever produces one (which would be some new models, of course).
